Oh my word this pollen is about to do several of us in!!

Fortunately for me personally, this season is relatively short lived and once everything is finally in bloom mine tend to settle down. Not so much for a few of my children. Years ago I created the Allergy Relief Stick for a quick and portable symptom reducer that was easy for me to use and safe for my children. The “allergy trio” of essential oils is lavender, lemon and peppermint. I will detail the benefits of these oils and how they can help reduce the symptoms for the allergy sufferers in your family in a safe and natural way. Essential oils are a wonderful way to help alleviate a range of allergy symptoms including sneezing, runny & stuffy nose, nagging cough, itchy eyes, hay fever and sinus inflammation. A few ways to use EO’s are topically, diffusing, ingestion and inhaling. Our Allergy Relief stick is great to use for topical support (can be inhaled by waving under your nose or by applying under your nose, along your sinus’s & brow bone avoiding your eyes, behind ears, along your neck & Eustachian tubes, your wrists and the bottom of your feet. You can also diffuse this trio (4 drops lavender, 4 drops lemon, 3 drops peppermint) as often as needed. While many may be a bit skeeved out about your feet (or rubbing oils on another’s feet) they are a wonderful gateway to deliver holistic relief for many ailments. This is due to our feet being the home of some of the largest pores on our body and they allow EO’s to pass quickly through the layers of skin releasing their benefits into your body more efficiently and with great results.

  • Lavender – is a natural antihistamine and powerful anti-inflammatory. In addition to reducing inflammation it helps reduce the enlargement of mucous cells. Using lavender can help reduce your allergy symptoms by strengthening your body to fight against the seasonal allergens as well as calm hives, bed bug rashes, insect bites and general skin irritations that can appear from skin allergies. It can also help alleviate headache pain that is associated with allergies and help calm your symptoms down. Diffusing lavender EO can help reduce asthmatic responses by suppressing inflammatory responses in your airways and can help ease the wheezing, sneezing and coughing that can happen in the night-time. You can also place a couple of drops on your pillow at bedtime to promote a restful nights sleep as well as rubbing a couple drops with a carrier oil or neat on the soles of your feet.

  • Lemon – has antioxidant properties that help cleanse toxins from your body and reduce your body’s responses to allergens. Lemon essential oil can also be mixed with water in a glass spray bottle and used as an antiseptic spray for disinfecting your home and removing allergy causing pathogens. There is research showing that it can fight bacterial infections and relieve allergic rhinitis symptoms by reducing nasal mucus. You can create your own nasal spray using lemon EO. It can also can be used to treat throat and mouth inflammation helping ease the discomfort of post nasal drip that is commonly associated with allergies. Its pleasing aroma can be combined in a diffuser with other citrus EO’s or can stand alone as a light, clean, aromatic & energizing scent to diffuse throughout the day and in every season!

  • Peppermint – hailed as one of the leading essential oils for allergy relief! It is an ideal oil to help offer relief form nasal congestion as well as alleviate discomfort and pain due to sinus pressure by opening your sinuses and increasing airflow. Peppermint oil is an effective expectorant that clears blocked and inflamed sinuses by reducing phlegm build up and combatting congestion. Peppermint oil as well as other EO’s provide bronchodilating properties that help relieve hay fever conditions, bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. In the diffuser, add 2-4 drops (depending on the size of your diffuser) and diffuse throughout the day and at bedtime! It can also be mixed with a carrier oil and rubbed on the chest to relieve bronchial symptoms and rubbed on the feet (put cozy socks on) as a holistic treatment to sooth your symptoms.

Essential oils are effective way to combat and relieve multiple allergy symptoms. It is important that your purchase your EO’s through a reputable company so DO YOUR RESEARCH! I highly recommend speaking with a certified aromatherapy practitioner or educator. As always, speak with your healthcare practitioner before adding the use of essential oils into your healthcare regiment. My family has greatly benefitted from the use of essential oils over the last 10 years and as always I am continuing to learn about the benefits and uses of a variety of oils. Happy oiling!
